Story of A Rabbit
Hoipolloi (United Kingdom)
18 - 21 Feb: 8pm. Additional 3pm matinee on 21 Feb.
Gallery Theatre, National Museum

Hoipolloi shows celebrate the imagination and take audiences away from the everyday. They are packed with larger than life characters and a lot of laughs; humour is a key element of any show, ranging from the darkly comic to laugh-out-loud slapstick. When Hugh finds his neighbour’s rabbit lying dead in his garden, the only sensible thing to do is to put it in a box. But it doesn’t fit. As he puzzles over what to do with the body he starts to wonder how much of life disappears once we die … A comic and curiously uplifting new show celebrating the complexities of death. Created and performed by Hugh Hughes and musician Aled Williams.

Hoipolloi will be conducting two workshops in Feb, one for adults and the other for students. Details below in the Workshops section.

Black Box, The Necessary Stage

Past Caring is the culmination of a year-long collaboration between the two companies. Inspired by the title of a poem by Australian poet/writer Henry Lawson, Past Caring is an inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural work exploring and weaving urgent issues of adoption, displacement, family, land and journey in the context of Singapore and Australia. The process began in January 2008, when some of the artists met in Singapore to share their personal stories. This created a dialogue which brought to light much of the issues tackled in Past Caring. In the second phase, all the artists gathered in Melbourne for research and improvisations, culminating in a 45-minute public presentation. The team will meet again in Singapore in February 2009 to develop the final phase of the project, with its world premiere on 25 February 2009. Past Caring is written and directed by Haresh Sharma and Alvin Tan and stars actors from Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Bringing the element of movement to the piece through physical dance is Tony Yap, Artistic Director of the Tony Yap Company.
